Scargill Walled Garden Tour

One of my favorite books and movies is The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett.  I was delighted to learn that Scargill has a large walled garden.  It was here when this was a private country estate and originally used for growing vegetables.  The stone walls keep animals out and provide a micro-climate for optimal growing conditions.  In recent years, Scargill volunteers have been lovingly tending this garden, and right now, it is in peak summer bloom.

Enjoy this garden tour.

This shows how tall the walls are.  The door is standard height.
This is the breathtaking view when you enter the door.

There are many benches in both sun and shade.

When I arrived, the poppies were in full bloom, as large as my hand.

There is even a stone potting shed and glass greenhouse.

"The kiss of the sun for pardon,
the song of the birds for mirth,
One is nearer God's heart in a garden,
than anywhere else on earth."
Dorothy Frances Gurney

Scargill is a member of the Quiet Garden Movement, which nurtures access to outdoor space for prayer and reflection.  There are over 300 Quiet Gardens around the world.
